Kentucky’s quarterback, Brock Vandagriff, took a few minutes after spring practice to chat with the media on Saturday, and he opened up about his new offensive coordinator, Bush Hamdan. It is no secret that former (and current) NFL OC, Liam Coen, was one of the main draws that brought Vandagriff to Lexington, so seeing Coen depart in such short order was not ideal.

Vandagriff spoke about what that was like. “When I first heard the talks [of Liam Coen taking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job] on Twitter or whatever, I was kind of like, ‘Dang,’ but by then I had already been throwing to some of the wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends…so (I thought), ‘As long as we don’t come in and run the triple option next year, I think we’ll be alright.'”

Triple option? Certainly not. A no-huddle offense made better with helmet communication and added toughness? Yes, absolutely.

Vandagriff went on to talk about Kentucky’s new offensive coordinator and what he brings to the table.

“[My] relationship with Coach Ham has been great so far. He’s really tough on us and that’s what we are looking for, but then again he’s good with us off the field. He’s hard on everybody, which is great. He tells you exactly what he wants if it’s not exactly how he wants it, he’s going to tell you that too. I just really respect him and what he does, and I’m really liking the offense so far.

It has to be a bit of an awkward spot to be in for both parties, but they seem to be breaking the ice just fine. And if Kentucky’s new quarterback likes the offense of the new OC, then that, in turn, gives Big Blue Nation, who is suddenly looking forward to football season, a lot to like as well.
