BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Which Modern Title Meant The Most?

by: Bryan1304/05/16
jeff_sheppard8 Villanova fans will forever remember last night and good for them.  They really did have a great team this year.  No matter how many titles you might win, every one of them is memorable.  But I get the sense that for each fan, there is always one title that means more than the others.  It can be for who you watched it with, your favorite player or coach finally winning a title, or simply who they beat.  UK has 4 modern-era titles and since most of the fanbase was not alive in 1958 we're not going to address those titles here.  I wonder which of the 4 titles means the most to you.  A little recap on why I think each of the titles was meaningful: 1978: Kentucky 94, Duke 88 -Meaningful because it was UK's first title in 20 years, Joe B. Hall's official certification as a UK legend, and the culmination of 4 years of that wonderful senior class headed up Jack Givens that fulfilled their potential.  It had been a season where it was basically title or bust and the Cats came through.  Many UK teams before that had fallen short but this team finally finished the deal.  Without being alive I get the sense that this title allowed the fanbase to exhale as UK was finally back on top of the college basketball world. 1996: Kentucky 76, Syracuse 67 -Meaningful because it ended the Cats 18 year drought but also was the finishing touches in Rick Pitino's bounce back from probation.  It also was the conclusion of probably the most dominating season in UK history.  It also was Tony Delk's final game and did he go out in style.  If not for Goose Givens' 41 points, Delk's performance might be considered the most clutch in UK history. 1998: Kentucky 78, Utah 69 -Meaning because, at the time, it looked like Tubby Smith was going to dominate like Pitino had.  It also was probably one of the more loved teams, with Padgett, Turner, Sheppard, Evans, Mills, and Edwards being some of the most fan favorite players in the modern era.  And despite it wrapping up a 35-4 season, it is unquestionably the most surprising of the championships listed, which for some make it a favorite. 2012: Kentucky 67, Kansas 59 -Meaningful because it finished off another dominating season, might have clinched Anthony Davis as the best overall UK player, and officially cemented John Calipari as a coaching elite.  It also completely wiped away all the negative Tubby and Gillispie taste from years past.  It came on the heels of beating Louisville too.
