Just hours after Mark Pope was officially announced as the new head coach of Kentucky men’s basketball, one of his former BYU players put their name into the transfer portal.

6-foot-4 sophomore guard Dallin Hall is officially in the portal, according to On3’s Jamie Shaw. This past season at BYU, Hall averaged nine points, 5.1 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in a team-high 29.3 minutes per outing, starting 30 of the 34 games he appeared in. The Utah native shot 42.2 percent from the field, 35.9 percent from deep, and 63.2 percent from the line in 2023-24.

Hall will have two years of college eligibility remaining.

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to connect the dots to Kentucky here. It’s surely no coincidence that Hall elected to transfer on the exact same day that Pope was named the Wildcats’ head coach. Whether or not Hall actually follows Pope to Lexington is unknown at this time, but we can assume that a conversation or two will be had.

Hall wouldn’t be a bad roster piece for Kentucky in 2024-25, either.

Coming out of Fremont (UT) High School, Hall was tabbed the 2020 Utah Gatorade Player of the Year and was considered a three-star recruit. He won a state championship as a senior and was even named Mr. Basketball. He chose BYU over the likes of Oregon State, Utah State, Utah, and Saint Mary’s.

From there, Hall took time off from competitive basketball as he went on a two-year mission in California. He didn’t skip a beat once he made it to BYU though in 2022. As a freshman, Hall averaged 7.3 points, 3.2 assists, and 1.9 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per contest. He started 21 of the 34 games he played in, making WCC All-Freshman along the way.

But even as BYU transitioned to the Big 12 starting in 2023-24, Hall continued to elevate his game. He was All-Big 12 Honorable Mention this past season. Some of his best performances came against top competition, too.

Hall dropped 18 points on two separate occasions, once against San Diego State at home and the other on the road against Kansas — both wins for BYU. He also had a 17-point, five-assist showing in a loss to Oklahoma on the road.
