Caitlin Clark records first rookie triple-double in WNBA history

On Saturday, WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark recorded her first WNBA triple-double. A 19-point, 12-rebound, 13-assist performance in a victory over the New York Liberty wasn’t just Clark’s first. It was the first rookie triple-double in WNBA history.
Clark has been setting records for months now, after first scoring 3,951 career points at Iowa. There, she became the all-team leading female scorer of the NCAA, and found herself ranked sixth on the men’s charts. The 6-foot guard set the record during her highest scoring game of her college career: 49 points against Michigan. Clark totaled 55 30-point games during her time at Iowa, the most by D1 player in the past 25 seasons.
After being selected first overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft, it took awhile for Clark to find her footing. Of course, being a rookie in the pros can’t be easy. In fact, she was the subject of some rookie-focused drama, claiming that veterans weren’t a fan of the talented guard. However, Clark has found her place.

The former Hawk averages 16 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game for the Fever. Pretty impressive for the rookie, though fans expected nothing less. Clark continues to improve day by day, and will no doubt be in serious contention for Rookie of the Year. While fans (and players) have differing opinions, there’s no argument that Clark has changed the game this season. The WNBA has seen historic numbers following the draft of Clark, Angel Reese, Cameron Brink, and many other talented players.
Clark’s triple-double might just put her as the front runner for Rookie of the Year. Voting for the WNBA All-Star game took place over the past couple weeks. On July 2, the WNBA announced Clark would represent team WNBA alongside Reese, Aliyah Boston, and others. This year’s appearance will be the first of (certainly) many appearances for the guard.
