At this point, it's hard to believe that Dominique Hawkins was a last-minute addition to this team. The point guard from Richmond caught the eye of John Calipari thanks to Marquis Estill and a huge performance in the Boys' Sweet 16, earning a scholarship offer from his dream school. Going into the season, most thought Hawkins would get clean-up minutes and be a steady four-year presence in Cal's system, but eight games in, he's proven to be a valuable contributor to this team, especially on defense.
Hawkins came in last night and helped Aaron Harrison shut down Bryce Cotton in the second half, and with him as the sixth man in the rotation, the Cats looked unstoppable. He finished the game with five points, one rebound, one assist, and one steal in 17 minutes.
Cal raved about Hawkins after the game, accidentally calling him Dominique Wilkins, the Human Highlight Reel:
"I thought little Dominique Wilkins, or Dominique – did I say Dominique Wilkins? I’m wondering if he was even in the league when I was coaching in the league. Oh my gosh. Dominique Hawkins went in, and he plays with confidence. He plays with defensive confidence, he plays with offensive confidence. He’s not as talented as some of the guys, but I feel very comfortable putting him in the game."
Cal seeing Dominique play in the Sweet 16 may have been the only good thing to come out of last March.
