Cason Wallace, CJ Fredrick did not practice Monday: "We'll see."

John Calipari had “no idea” if Kentucky would have Cason Wallace available when the Wildcats traveled to Nashville for the SEC Tournament. CJ Fredrick is battling a cracked rib and Sahvir Wheeler remains out indefinitely after undergoing a minor procedure last week.

UK survived in Fayetteville significantly shorthanded — Wallace and Wheeler were out while Fredrick was limited, barely able to give it a go — but how about in the SEC Tournament? The trio was not able to practice today, leaving things up in the air for this week.

“They didn’t practice today. Our practice was a film session, things that I want to add to how we’re playing and a situation we may confront. It was about an hour, so they did not practice,” Calipari said during his call-in radio show Monday evening. “We practice tomorrow at 3, we got tomorrow and Wednesday’s practice.”

“They’re gonna have to start practicing. You don’t just say, ‘OK, I’m ready for Friday.’ No, you’re gonna have to get on the floor at some point. We’ll see.”

Wheeler will be out, no question. Wallace is an unknown. Fredrick, the team’s Most Impactful Player in the win at Arkansas? Yeah, he’s hurting today, earning the much-needed rest after gutting out 15 tough minutes against the Razorbacks.

“The night before, I said, ‘CJ, I know you’re hurting, but I need you for five minutes a half if you’re capable of doing it.’ He said, ‘I am.’ I said, ‘Do you want to start or do you want to come off the bench? I just need you five, six minutes a half.’ He said he’d do whatever I wanted him to do,” Calipari explained. “I said, ‘Why don’t you start, then that may be the end of it.’ So he started both halves. He looked at me and said, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t go anymore.’ I said, ‘Alright.’ Then later I looked at him one time on the bench and he nodded, I said no. He gave us everything he had, and without him, we don’t win the game.”

Fredrick didn’t care that his season averages continue to take hits playing hurt — two points on 0-2 shooting isn’t a box score to frame on your wall. All he’s focused on is winning basketball games.

“I can tell you, I said, ‘CJ, how you feel today?’ He says, ‘I hurt a little bit.’ But for what he did, think about that,” Calipari said. “Didn’t care about the stats, didn’t care about anything. ‘I’ll give you whatever I can,’ and that’s what he said. And that’s what he did.

“Let me tell you why guys don’t like to play injured, when I say I only need them for eight minutes. Guys don’t like screwing up their stats. ’10 minutes? I’m averaging 15, if I only get two points, then my stats…’ This kid doesn’t worry about stats, he’s worried about nothing except helping our team win.”

Four days to get healthy for SEC Tournament action, with the Wildcats set to play their first game Friday evening. Will either Wallace or Fredrick be able to take the floor? As of today, that’s unclear, but practice the rest of the week will decide that one way or the other.
