CBS says UofL will be better than UK because of Lamar Jackson's legacy, which doesn't make sense

by:TJ Walker08/14/18

We’re all hungry for football and craving the season opener (18 days but who’s counting), so I understand the desperation in producing football content. Most teams don’t regularly allow open practices and we’re mostly just regurgitating the same stories from May.

Things are slow outside of Ohio State and Maryland.

To get people talking CBS thought it would be fun to rank the best team in every state. Solid content item in my opinion. Nearly every team in every state has some sort of in-state rival, so this is perfect for trash talk during a slow time. There’s some obvious exceptions like Louisiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and a few others, but most states have in-state rivals and this is a good way to pump up or tick off some fan bases. Heck, it has us talking.

Mission accomplished. When talking about the Commonwealth Brent Sallee says UofL will be better than Kentucky this season but his reasoning is beyond odd:

Louisville: The Lamar Jackson experience wrapped up after last season, but the 2016 season left an indelible mark on the program — which is head-and-shoulders above every other Division I program in the state. — Barrett Sallee

If you think Louisville will be better than Kentucky this season I won’t argue with you. It probably wouldn’t be worth my time and I’m not sure I could do a good enough job convincing anyone that the Cats will definitively be better than Louisville. UK returns more starters and received more votes in the Coaches Poll, but Louisville has owned the series as of late and dominated UK last season.

However, to say that UofL will be better because Lamar Jackson left an “indelible mark on the program” is ridiculous. It doesn’t make sense. UofL will be better than Kentucky this upcoming season because Lamar Jackson had people paying attention to UofL football over the last two years? I must be missing something. Sallee didn’t mention any current players or strengths and weaknesses. If this were about the best programs currently in the state, fine, but this article’s purpose was picking the best team heading into the season. Sallee certainly didn’t show his work behind his UofL pick.

I enjoyed this article but the folks at CBS were lazy when discussing our state. If you want to read the rest click HERE.
