Cincinnati Tight End Josh Kattus Commits to Kentucky

The dice are scalding hot as Vince Marrow sets up shop for good at a valuable Cincinnati pipeline.

Tuesday morning on KSR Josh Kattus announced his commitment to Kentucky. The three-star tight end selected the Cats over scholarships from more than 20 schools, including Louisville, Michigan, Cincinnati, Pitt, Arkansas and Northwestern.

Kattus may not have the enormous recruiting rankings like some of his peers in UK’s 2022 recruiting class, but it’s still an enormous recruiting win for a variety of reasons.

A three-star prospect, Kattus is considered one of the 30 best prospects from the state of Ohio as a rising star at Cincinnati Moeller High School, a program that has produced elite athletes for decades. By adding Kattus, Marrow has officially tapped a pipeline into the important feeder school. Kattus will be the third Moeller grad on the roster in the fall of ’22, joining cornerback Carrington Valentine and tight end Brenden Bates.

The win for Kentucky is a huge loss for Louisville. The Cards still have zero commitments in their ’22 recruiting class. Last week Jody Demling reported that Kattus was Scott Satterfield’s top tight end target. What a shame.

Turning down Louisville is becoming commonplace in the world of football recruiting. What’s difficult is convincing a kid to not play for his father’s alma mater that is coached by his father’s former quarterback. Eric Kattus was a team captain and an All-Big Ten tight end for the Wolverines that caught eight passes from Jim Harbaugh in the 1985 season. The younger Kattus had a Michigan offer, but still chose Kentucky.

At 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, Kattus is already built like an SEC tight end. Not only does he have the power and strength to absorb blows from multiple defenders, he has the balance to stay on his feet and still get yards after the catch. Kattus can use that strength to reach block defensive ends or serve as the lead block for runners as an H-back.

Vince Marrow scored another big win for the Cats by securing a commitment from someone who can set the edge on the Big Blue Wall for years to come.
