College Football Cheat Sheet: The sprint is almost over

College football is not a marathon sport. The regular season is a sprint. No sport moves faster than this one. We’ve almost reached the end.
There are only three full Saturdays left. Enjoy them while they are here. This next November Saturday will include a couple of huge games in the SEC, the Lane Kiffin Bowl, Pat Narduzzi acting like Notre Dame doesn’t matter, some interesting contests in the Big 12, and some more chaos in the ACC.
This won’t be boring.

Young vs. Old Saturday in the SEC
Many teams in the SEC are still alive in the College Football Playoff race. That will change on Saturday. Two SEC teams are facing elimination and another one has a game against a program that is currently trying to hire away its head coach.
It’s old vs. young in the SEC.
— Oklahoma (7-2, 3-2) at Alabama (8-1, 6-0): The Sooners are having a bounce-back season in their second year in the SEC. Will they record consecutive wins in Knoxville and Tuscaloosa? Alabama has been rolling since the Week 1 loss to Florida State and has the inside track to face Texas A&M in the SEC Championship Game.
— Florida (3-6, 2-4) at Ole Miss (9-1, 5-1): Florida wants to hire Lane Kiffin. Ole Miss wants to prevent Florida from hiring Lane Kiffin. That adds a level of intrigue to this rare SEC matchup. The Gators knocked the Rebels out of the playoff last season. Ole Miss probably hasn’t forgotten that, but most of the talk about this game is regarding what Kiffin will do after the season.
— Texas (7-2, 4-1) at Georgia (8-1, 6-1): The Horns and Dawgs will meet for the third time in the last two seasons on Saturday night in Athens. Texas cannot afford a lose. UGA is getting close to locking up a top-four seed again. Two major helmet logos. It should be a good one at Sanford Stadium.
Some potential elimination games in the Big Ten
Indiana, Ohio State, and Oregon are all huge home favorites in Big Ten play this weekend. What should everyone be watching for this league? We’ve got some potential elimination games. One is being played at a Major League Baseball stadium.
— Michigan (7-2, 5-1) at Northwestern (5-4, 3-3): The annual Wrigley Field game for Northwestern has arrived in Week 12. This year’s opponent is Michigan. A slobber-knocker is expect in what could be a race to 17 points. The Wolverines have back-to-back games on the road against Northwestern and Maryland before hosting Ohio State on rivalry weekend. Everyone knows what will be at stake in that one.
Iowa (6-3, 4-2) at USC (7-2, 5-1): Iowa likely saw its chance at the playoff go away last week with a crushing home loss to Oregon. Now the Hawks hit the road to face USC. The Trojans are putting a good season together, and would have a playoff resume case if they can get to 9-3, but they need this win on the resume.
Some tricky spots for Big 12 contenders
Texas Tech is officially the team to beat in the Big 12, but there are two other teams (Cincinnati, BYU) with just one close loss, and another (Utah) with a great chance to earn an at-large bid to the playoff. All three of them are in a tricky spot on Saturday.
— Arizona (6-3, 3-3) at Cincinnati (7-2, 5-1): Cincinnati has not played since that blowout loss in Salt Lake City. A huge home game against BYU awaits next week for the Bearcats. They can’t get caught messing around this week. Arizona’s defense is very good and their offense should score points on this Cincinnati defense.

— Utah (7-2, 4-2) at Baylor (5-4, 3-3): The Utes are in good position to make the field as a 10-2 team if they win out with solid resume losses to Texas Tech and BYU on the resume. But they must win out. Dave Aranda is very much on the hot seat. Baylor and could really use a win.
— TCU (6-3, 3-3) at BYU (8-1, 5-1): TCU is out of the race but this is still one of the best teams in this conference. BYU is coming off a tough loss to Texas Tech and has a huge game with Cincinnati looming next week. Could this be a trap spot?
The wheel of chaos continues to spin in the ACC
Five ACC teams have one loss in the league with three weeks left in the season. None of them are Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, or Miami. The chas conference is certainly delivering. All signs point to this being a one-bid league — unless Duke wins the league title and is ranked below James Madison.
We would expect nothing less. It’s wide open. Expect some more upsets over the next three weeks.
— Notre Dame (7-2) at Pittsburgh (7-2, 5-1): Pitt has much bigger games upcoming against Georgia Tech and Miami over the next two weeks. Pat Narduzzi is very well aware. This could be the win that locks in a playoff bid for Notre Dame.
— Virginia (8-2, 5-1) at Duke (5-4, 4-1): Virginia had been playing with fire and finally got burned at home against Wake Forest last week. But starting quarterback Chandler Morris is expected to return this week. Duke is scoring points, and winning ACC games, but can’t beat anyone in the non-conference. This probably won’t be a boring college football game.
— Georgia Tech (8-1, 5-1) at Boston College (1-9, 0-6): Boston College is the worst power conference team not named Oklahoma State this season. But this is a road game for the Yellow Jackets. Brent Key‘s squad has been the best team in this conference all season. This team could clinch an ACC Championship Game spot and play Georgia for one of the biggest games in program history all in the next few weeks.
NC State (5-4, 2-3) at Miami (7-2, 3-2): The Canes are on the outside looking in of the ACC title race but they will have a solid playoff resume at 10-2 thanks to that Week 1 Notre Dame win. To get there, they must win out. Before back-to-back road games to close the year, Miami must handle an NC State offense that can score a ton of points.
