The PGA TOUR’s Barbasol Championship begins tomorrow when Round 1 tees off at Keene Trace Golf Club just outside of Lexington, Kentucky, with the hometown star Josh Teater in the first group off No. 1’s tee at 7:15 a.m. in the morning. From that first swing through Sunday evening when a champion is crowned, 132 golfers will contend for the shiny new Barbasol trophy that was unveiled in 2019, the last time the Barbasol was played.

To get you ready for the PGA’s stop in Central Kentucky, a guide with everything to know ahead of Thursday’s opening round:

THE TOURNAMENT

The Barbasol Championship is in Kentucky for the third time since the tournament moved from Alabama to the Bluegrass in 2018, only three years after the tournament debuted on the PGA TOUR schedule. Played opposite The Open each year, the Barbasol Championship is considered an alternate event due to its weakened field and smaller purse size as most of the game’s stars are across the pond competing to win a major at The Open. There are five alternate events each season; the other four are played opposite of the four World Golf Championships.

HOST SITE/COURSE

Champions Golf Course at Keene Trace Golf Club is the site of the Barbasol Championship. Located in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Champions is a par 72 for the competitors and plays around 7,328 yards this weekend.

It is considered one of the easiest golf courses on the TOUR, which means the scores tend to be much lower than other events.

PURSE

$3.5 million

The winner’s share is $630,000 plus 300 FedEx Cup points, a two-year PGA TOUR exemption and a spot in the PGA Championship.

THE FIELD

The Barbasol’s field will not include any of the top 50 golfers in the world this year, but there are still plenty of names you may recognize and several up-and-comers looking for their big break. Notable names include defending champion Jim Herman; 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, the highest-ranked player in the field; 2013 PGA Championship winner Jason Dufner; Stephen Jaeger, a six-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour looking to get back on TOUR; friend of the program J.T. Poston, winner of the 2019 Wyndham Championship; and Lexington’s own Josh Teater eager to improve upon a sixth-place finish in the last Barbasol Championship.

John Daly is in town too. He missed the cut but drew a crowd in 2019.
