Kroger KSR Game of the Week: Corbin at Boyle County

This week’s Kroger KSR Game of the Week could potentially be labeled as the game of the decade. Corbin and Boyle County have been on a collision course since the beginning of the 2023 season. Many thought this game would be played next week. But, RPI indicated otherwise.

The Rebels are KSR’s top-ranked team regardless of classification. The Redhounds enter Friday night at number two. This one has all the makings for an instant classic with the winner advancing to the semifinal round of the 4A playoffs. As you can imagine, we are excited to be traveling to Danville on Friday night.

BOYLE COUNTY

Justin Haddix’s Rebels are averaging 48 points per game. This number could be higher, but his starters rarely played a four-quarter game. The Rebel defense gives up just 11 points per outing. BC is ranked second in 4A with a 36-point scoring margin on the plus side. Individual numbers aren’t as high as you expect. This is based on limited playing time for the starters in a schedule that featured multiple running clock formats.

The Boyle County offense has displayed tremendous balance by throwing for 220 and rushing for 198 yards per game. Quarterback Sage Dawson leads Haddix’s attack. He’s thrown for 2,223 yards and 28 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. Dawson is also active in the rushing game by averaging 20 yards per carry and three scores. Do-it-all Avery Bodner is one of my favorite players in the state. The senior has rushed for 1,009 yards and scored 16 TDs on the ground. Bodner has also recorded 22 catches for 306 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns.

Montavin Quisenberry has been offered by Kentucky and has added 425 yards and 13 running scores. He also paces the Rebels with 34 receptions for 737 yards and has 12 receiving scores. Geordon Brown has 16 catches and 8 scores. He’s joined by Demauriah Brown’s 27 receptions and 5 touchdowns.

Back to Bodner. The all-around athlete leads the Rebels with 63 tackles, 11.5 TFLs, and 4 QB sacks. Linebacker Brock Driver is second with 61 stops, 9.5 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks. Demauriah Brown is tops on the team with 3 interceptions, and Montavin Quisenberry has contributed 2 picks. The Rebels have recorded 81 TFLs and 31 QB sacks.

CORBIN

The undefeated Redhounds are coached by Corbin legend Tom Greer. Much like Boyle County, the Corbin starters rarely played in the second half in the majority of their games. This factor can be seen in individual statistics. CHS is averaging 38 points per game and giving up a 4A-best 4.7 per outing for an average positive scoring margin of 33.5 points per game.

Quarterback Kade Elam is one of the most underrated players in Kentucky. The junior multi-sport star is completing 73% of his passes and has thrown for 2,344 yards and 26 touchdowns. He’s only thrown two interceptions and is a Louisville baseball commit. Elam has also rushed for 215 yards and 9 TDs on the ground. Receiver Carter Stewart is 4A’s third-leading pass catcher with 50 receptions for 1,030 yards and 13 scores. Sophomore TE Eli Pietrowski sports a UK offer and has 12 receptions for 272 yards and 3 scores. Guy Bailey is Greer’s leading rusher with 707 yards and 15 scores. Corbin rushes for 150 and throws for 221 yards per outing.

The top-ranked Redhound defense is nasty. CHS is giving up fewer than 5 points per contest. Opponents are running for 83 and throwing for 69 yards per clip. The Hounds are led by Under Armor All Americans and Kentucky commits Jacob and Jerod Smith. Jacob Smith is Corbin’s top tackler with 93 stops including 5 for loss and 4 QBS. Jerod Smith has recorded 84 tackles, 20 TFLs, and 8 sacks. Evan Baker and Mikey Neal have registered 75 and 69 tackles respectively.

Buckle up and get your popcorn ready for Friday night. It doesn’t get any better than this in terms of talent, coaching, tradition, and expectation. Both the Hounds and Rebels have a state title or bust mentality. Get there early or get your tickets ahead of time if you plan on attending in person. There will be avenues to watch the streamed version that KSR will update you on as we close in on game day. The state’s top two teams are facing off in round three. This is a must-see for football fans in the Commonwealth. I can’t wait.
