We have now reached the second wave of transfer portal action in the college football offseason. As the May 1 deadline quickly approaches, players will be entering the waiver wire at a high rate. A recent SEC move could make some sense for Kentucky.

After one season at LSU, running back Corey Kiner has decided to move on.

“My time as a Tiger has come to an end,” wrote Kiner on Twitter. “I would like to start a new chapter in my life and explore my options to continue my career as a student-athlete elsewhere.”

As a true freshman at LSU, Kiner played in 11 games earning one start finishing the year with 324 rushing yards on 79 attempts with a pair of touchdowns. A former top-200 recruit out of high school, Kiner committed to Ed Orgeron’s program despite receiving some legitimate interest from Ohio State, Kentucky, Notre Dame, and Michigan State. As a senior, Kiner rushed for 1,866 yards and 35 touchdowns bringing home Ohio Mr. Football honors as he led his team to the state semifinals. Kiner finished his prep career with 7,130 rushing yards and 116 rushing touchdowns

Pursuing the transfer would appear to make a ton of sense for the Wildcats. Corey Kiner fits a need and has some clear ties to the current Kentucky football roster.

Kentucky appears to be in the market for another tailback

On Friday, former Indiana signee Gi’Bran Payne did the expected and committed to Notre Dame. The four-star recruit out of Cincinnati LaSalle decided to follow his recruiter Deland McCullough who took a job on Marcus Freeman’s first staff at Notre Dame. However, Kentucky made a push.

The tailback took a visit to Kentucky, and the Wildcats were the runner-ups in the recruitment. That tells us that the program could be in the market for a transfer.

Kentucky lost its first player post-spring when Earnest Sanders entered the transfer portal. We should expect some more attrition to occur over the next two weeks as the Wildcats put the final touches on their 2022 roster. Currently, Kentucky has five tailbacks on scholarship led by Chris Rodriguez Jr. and JuTahn McClain. The Wildcats did not add a player in the 2022 recruiting class. Michael Drennen II and Kavosiey Smoke are quality options after that, but both could be transfer candidates.

If either enters the transfer portal, expect Kentucky to make a strong run at Corey Kiner. Outside of Rodriguez, the Wildcats currently do not have a back with plus size and proven power as a runner. Kiner seems to possess those traits and is from Kentucky’s home recruiting base.

This is a transfer recruitment that seems to check a ton of boxes.

UPDATE: Kiner is a Bearcat
