Deion Sanders emerges as potential candidate for Florida State head coaching job

A new name has emerged in the Florida State football coaching search, and it isn’t Mark or Bob Stoops.

Instead, it’s two-time Super Bowl champion and eight-time Pro Bowler Deion Sanders.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Prime Time has “emerged as a prime candidate to take the Florida State head coaching job.”

“This opening has drawn some big attention from some big names, and few bigger than Deion Sanders,” he said. “That’s right, sources tell me and Mike Garafolo [of the NFL Network] that our colleague Deion Sanders, the NFL Network analyst and Hall-of-Fame cornerback has emerged as a prime candidate to take the Florida State head coaching job.

“Obviously, Sanders is one of the faces of that college, one of their most notable alumnus. And he has kept in contact, remained close with several players who graduated from Florida State, serving as a mentor for them. He has always been about that college, and now, potentially has the opportunity to serve as their head coach.”

Jay Glazer of FOX NFL Sunday is also reporting that the “FSU chatter is real” for Sanders, adding that the legendary NFL player would “recruit unlike anyone else” and “connect with the kids on that level.”

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also vouched for Sanders as a coach, saying he has “watched him coach” and feels he would be “great” at the college level.

“I’ve actually watched him coach. I’ve watched him work with younger players in the pros and he’s outstanding,” Jones said on “K and C Masterpiece” on 105.3 The Fan on Friday. “He has all the credibility that you could ever imagine, both from knowing what he’s talking about, plus the sensitivity or the perception that he has with people skills. He’d be a great coach.”

While he’s not reporting of his own or adding to the speculation, NBA superstar LeBron James is even rooting for Sanders to get the job at Florida State.

Despite the reports from two prominent and credible outlets in the NFL world, Jim Henry of the Tallahassee Democrat denied rumors of Sanders’ candidacy for the FSU job this morning.

“Despite a report from the NFL Network that Deion Sanders is a candidate for the vacant FSU football coaching job, sources close to the search tell the Democrat that he is not a candidate,” he wrote.

Henry also added that former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops remains in contention.

“Former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops quickly emerged as a top candidate to replace Taggart,” Henry wrote. “David Coburn, FSU’s director of athletics, confirmed to the Democrat earlier this week that Stoops is “on the list, and he’s certainly somebody we would consider.” But officials say they are letting the search play out and are looking for the committee to identify a pool of candidates.”

Luckily for Kentucky fans, Mark Stoops’ name was noticeably absent from any of the reports listed above.
