The coaching carousel continues to spin but the expected player movement ahead of the transfer portal window in January is happening right now. A few days after news broke that LaNorris Sellers would be returning to South Carolina, another SEC quarterback became the biggest name to enter free agency.

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is on the move after spending two years in Gainesville.

The former five-star recruit was the National Gatorade Player of the Year at Willis (Texas) High when he threw for over 4,000 yards and 58 touchdowns during his senior season. DJ Lagway was a massive recruiting win for head coach Billy Napier and was supposed to be the face of Florida football under the new regime. After starting quarterback Graham Mertz tore his ACL in 2024, Lagway stepped into the starting lineup as a true freshman and threw for 1,915 yards with a 59.9 percent completion rate on 10 yards per attempt over seven starts. However, the quarterback dealt with a nagging hamstring and shoulder injuries. Lagway missed most of this past offseason while dealing with injuries and did not have to start campaign many thought was coming in 2025. The quarterback ended his second season in college football with 2,264 passing yards on a 63.2 percent completion rate. Lagway’s yards per attempt number took a big dip (6.7), and the quarterback threw 14 interceptions as the Gators suffered through a tough season.

Jon Sumrall and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner have taken over in Gainesville. DJ Lagway will not be their starting quarterback. Where could the former blue-chip prospect with two years of eligibility remaining land? Many believe that relocating to a Texas school is a likely option. ESPN’s Pete Thamel is reporting something very interesting.

According to sources, Lagway is seeking a fresh start to harness his talent, much in the way quarterbacks like Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels reshaped their careers after transferring from their original schools in recent years.

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham and Kentucky head coach Will Stein were the offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coach in the two years that Bo Nix was in Eugene. Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock was the play caller when Daniels was at LSU, but Kentucky offensive coordinator Joe Sloan was the quarterbacks coach. Could UK be a landing spot for Lagway?

We will find out soon. Roster-building season is right around the corner. The transfer portal window officially opens on Jan. 2.
