Durant to Sign With Jay-Z; Cats Next?

by:Corey Nichols06/08/13
jay-z-cats1 NBA superstar Kevin Durant is dropping his current agent to join hip-hop superstar Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports, according to ESPN.  Apparently, his need for a committed "sports agent" has waned, while his use for a marketing expert has gone up. Because Durant just signed an $85 million extension with the Thunder over the next three years, he'd rather focus on expanding his brand, rather than his contract.  Fair enough.  Hova has only been an agent for a few months, but has already signed athletes from multiple sports, like Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Jets (and former WVU) quarterback Geno Smith, and Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins. The question now is, with Jay's ties to the UK program (not as strong as Drake's, but still there), will future Cats sign with Roc Nation Sports?  Could we see Julius Randle, or Andrew Harrison, or any other future draftees working with the King of hip hop?  Very possibly. The key question is: how effective will Jay be with contract negotiation?  Durant switched because he was already established in the league, and wanted to start selling shirts and cologne.  Would a guy like Marquis Teague benefit from the same arrangement?  Maybe not.  If Jay proves that he can sell his players to GMs, as well as everyday shoppers, he could sign a bunch of Wildcats going forward.  And that could be yet another selling point in an already loaded arsenal for Coach Cal. Also, will his miniscule ownership interest in the Brooklyn Nets hinder his ability to represent young players?  No telling.  But if these things get worked out, it could be the start of a beautiful relationship. Jay-Z and UK--A tale as old as time.
