Just tragic news out of Akron, Ohio.

Ericka Weems, the sister of one-time Kentucky Men’s Basketball staff member Brandon Weems, was found dead on Monday afternoon after being shot in the head while inside of her own home. She was 37 years old.

According to a report by Cleveland.com, “Police found Weems about 3 p.m. inside of the home on Hardesty Boulevard just south of Little Street, police say. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police were called to the home to do a welfare check.”

Akron police currently have no suspects and the case is under investigation. Family members have come out begging for information that may help lead to an arrest.

Ericka’s brother, Brandon Weems, spent three seasons in Lexington under head coach John Calipari and was a staff member on the 2012 National Championship team. His official title was Assistant Director of Basketball Operations and he is currently the director of scouting with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Brandon is a known friend of Akron native and NBA icon, LeBron James. The two both played high school basketball at St. Vincent-St. Mary, which is also located in Akron.

James has already addressed the situation on social media, asking the city of Akron to help figure out how and why this tragedy occurred.

The Cleveland Cavaliers also released a statement regarding Ericka’s heartbreaking death.

“The entire Cavaliers organization was terribly saddened to learn about the recent tragic death of Brandon Weems’ sister Ericka. Our hearts are heavy and filled with pain over this senseless act. We express our deepest condolences to Brandon, the entire Weems family, their loved ones, and the Akron community. We will be with Brandon throughout this extremely difficult time and will offer our assistance and resources to help find justice for Ericka.”

Make sure to keep the Weems’ family in your thoughts.
