The city of Indianapolis hasn’t been too kind to the Kentucky men’s basketball program over the years, but the Wildcats can change that come next March. An obvious reason why? Mark Pope‘s likely starting backcourt duo is good enough to lead Kentucky to a ninth national championship.

“Yeah, they are,” The Field of 68’s Terrence Oglesby said when asked if a backcourt of Jaland Lowe and Otega Oweh can lead the Wildcats to a ninth championship. “They’re good enough to win a national title.

The Final Four will be held in Indy for the upcoming 2025-26 season, a place where Kentucky has lost five straight, dating back to 2018, not to mention the 2015 Final Four against Wisconsin. We don’t need to rehash that one. Some demons are roaming the streets of Indianapolis for the Big Blue Nation. But Oglesby believes Lowe and Oweh can help exorcise them.

“I think they should be in Indianapolis,” Oglesby added. “Should be.”

His co-host at The Field of 68, John Fanta, mostly agrees with the overall point — Kentucky’s backcourt tandem of Lowe and Oweh is, on paper, good enough to cut down the nets next spring. Fanta’s concerns with the Wildcats don’t center around them, though.

“They can. They’re good enough,” Fanta said when asked the same question as Oglesby. “The question for me isn’t Kentucky’s backcourt, it’s Kentucky’s frontcourt. It’s just a matter of can Kentucky’s frontcourt be able to do their job. They’re gonna be a backcourt-oriented team.”

Both Fanta and Oglesby are confident in what Lowe and Oweh will bring to the table this year. Lowe was an All-ACC Third Team performer as a sophomore last season on a bad Pitt team, while Oweh is the likely Preseason SEC Player of the Year. If they have any concerns, it’s how those two balance getting themselves going while also feeding the depth of talent that makes up Pope’s roster.

Fanta is also interested in seeing how Lowe adapts to a new role where he won’t be asked to do as much, but if all goes according to plan as expected, it should be a smooth transition period. In the same conversation, The Field of 68‘s Rob Dauster made sure to mention the likes of Denzel Aberdeen, Collin Chandler, and Jasper Johnson as other key backcourt pieces for the ‘Cats, but it starts and ends with Lowe and Oweh. They’re good enough to always give Kentucky a chance to win, especially when it comes to making a run in the NCAA Tournament.

“If those two reach their max,” Fanta said of Lowe and Oweh. “That’s a national championship-caliber backcourt.”
