Kenny Brooks secured his second commitment from the transfer portal when Liberty transfer Asia Boone picked Kentucky as her next landing spot. Let’s break down some of the 5-foot-8 guard’s film and talk about what she’ll bring to the team.

We’ll do this for every acquisition Kentucky gets this offseason. Check out the Josie Gilvin FILM ROOM article when you get through this one if you haven’t yet.

Now, let’s watch some tape.

Being able to create her own shot

Off the jump, Asia Boone’s film reminds me of when I watched Dazia Lawrence‘s film for the first time [Dazia Lawrence FILM ROOM]. I immediately noticed just how lethal Boone is on the offensive end of the floor. Is she as good a scorer as Lawrence? That probably remains to be seen, but I think she could really thrive in Brooks’ system like Lawrence did.

The main similarity between the two is that they’re both able to create their own shot. A lot of times, shooters need screens to get open, especially if they typically play off the ball. However, when Boone gets the ball in her hands, she doesn’t always need a set ran to get her open. She can take a player on one-on-one and come away with the bucket.

She has some nice ball handling abilities to get her open, but she also does a nice job of using footwork to create separation as well.

Able to get downhill and score amongst the trees

Not only can Asia Boone shoot it — and shoot it well — but she can get to the paint as well.

Defenders tend to close out on her aggressively, so she will oftentimes take advantage of that by beating her opponent off the dribble and get to the rim. Then, once she’s down there, she’s crafty enough to be able to score on much more physically imposing defenders.

It’ll be interesting to see what plays Kenny Brooks will run for her to get the ball in her hands. At Liberty, coach Carey Green implemented flare screens to get Boone open on the perimeter. Most of the time, that was so she could get a three-pointer in. However, Boone would sometimes take the ball to the hole instead to mix things up. It’s good for her to be versatile offensively.

A quick trigger from beyond the arc

Then, the thing that Boone does best: shoot the thee. She’s a career 36.9% shooter from three-point range. It’s fair to question how well she’ll translate to the SEC, but you know what’s nice about basketball? Whatever conference you play in, the ball is round (though not all balls are created equally, to be fair), the hoop is 10 feet high and 22.15 feet from the basket.

It helps that she has a quick trigger too. Her release point is high, and she gets her shot off quick. That immediately makes her all the more dangerous from deep.

Point being, Boone’s shooting should be able to translate, and that’s what she’ll be needed the most for.
