Film Room: Davis McCray

Kentucky added five transfers and five high school prospects to the wide receiver room at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility in the offseason. However, the Cats got old with all of the senior additions and must start replenishing the position. Wideout had to be addressed in the 2026 high school cycle. First-year wide receivers coach L’Damian Washington got the Cats on the board just a couple of days after the first big official visit weekend of the summer.
San Antonio (Texas) Cornerstone Christian rising senior Davis McCray has decided to end his recruitment. The Wildcats have recorded a rare recruiting win in the Lonestar State.
What is the UK offense getting in the three-star prospect? Davis McCray is a true outside receiver with some speed, burst, and a big catch radius. The addition pulls off the rarely seen wide receiver/linebacker double-dip and you do see some of that tenacity from the other side of the ball show up on tape.
Size and burst
Davis McCray plays in a true spread offense that asks the wide receiver to line up with large splits and win on gos, hitches, and slants. Kentucky will need the prospect to do more in their pro-style offense, but there are some physical traits worth investing in. The latest recruiting win brings size, a good catch radius, and impressive multi-faceted acceleration to the field.
McCray is a big-body target on slants who flashes a good catch radius consistently on tape. That radius shows up in the middle of the field. Once the ball is in his hands, the new Kentucky commit can get his foot in the ground and accelerate quickly. That acceleration shows itself when asked to stop-and-start. The prospect simply shows the ability to run away from defenders on the field.

The long speed that McCray uses in track and field shows up on the football field.
Outside receiver with intriguing skill set
Davis McCray is not really anywhere closed to a finish project. That’s not really a bad thing. Route-running will need to be improved quickly, but Kentucky’s first skill talent recruiting win brings some intriguing skills to the table.
Positional size and acceleration.
McCray won’t be the biggest wideout at the next level, but the prospect shows very good length on tape, and that allows him to be a big target on in-breaking routes. The 2026 recruit will need to prove that he can handle and win against press coverage but the stop-and-start acceleration should allow him to create separation.
Development is needed, but McCray does bring some tangible skills to the table, and the play on defense shows a physical football player who embraces contact. All of those traits should create a solid foundation for this player at the next level.
