Former Kentucky Wildcat Jon Sumrall is Staying at Tulane
Before the transfer portal opened for business, the college football coaching carousel took another mild spin. Jon Sumrall, a former Kentucky player and coach, shared that he’s not making a move during this cycle.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that “he’s not pursuing any of the open jobs in this cycle.” Sumrall confirmed the report with the Wolf of Wall Street “I’m not leaving!” GIF.
“I know we lost two games and everyone wants to run me out of town, but I’m here and I showed up to work today,” Sumrall responded to questions about his job status following Friday night’s AAC Championship Game.
“I’m not going to comment on hypotheticals. I’m trying to figure out how we can win a game. People call. They call my agent. I don’t talk to them very often. Very little gets to me, very little. Almost nothing gets to me. I’m not talking, I’m not talking, I’m not talking. When it gets to me it’s usually because it’s something I need to consider. I’m not — nothing’s getting to me right now. I can say that, nothing’s getting to me. Could that change? I don’t know, if some newspaper tripled your salary, you might go.”

Sumrall has coached in three straight confeerence championship games, winning back-to-back Sun Belt titles at Troy. His Tulane Green Wave lost in a blowout at Army in Friday night’s AAC Championship Game. Tulane was a contender for the G5 playoff spot until they lost the regular season finale on Thanksgiving night to Memphis.
His name has been linked to multiple job openings during a coaching carousel that has not featured many high-profile openings at the power conference level. The most intriguing was at North Carolina where Sumrall appeared to be the favorite until Bill Belichick and Matt Campbell got involved.
Sumrall is a popular name on Kentucky message boards. Many people in the industry believe he would have been at Kentucky if Mark Stoops did make a move to Texas A&M last offseason. Whenever Stoops struggles, as he did many times last fall, Sumrall’s name will be mentioned and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon, even though the former Wildcat is staying in New Orleans… for now.
