Former Wildcat, Derrick Thomas, named head football coach at Dunbar
Dunbar has a new head football coach. Former Kentucky linebacker, Derrick Thomas, has been named the interim head coach of the Bulldogs with the assumption that he will be retained as the top man after the upcoming season. Thomas bounced around assistant coaching jobs in Lexington high schools for the past five seasons, but never received a head coaching offer. Eventually, he dropped to the middle school level so that he could get a shot at being the head man.
However, after former Dunbar coach, Bob Lawson, retired unexpectedly, administrators were looking to fill the vacancy quickly and agreed on Thomas because of his knowledge of football and his familiarity with the student-athletes. He had previously served as a guidance counselor at the school for eight years.
In addition to starting for the Wildcats during the early 90s, Thomas was an All-State linebacker for Bryan Station in 1986. He’s got a difficult task ahead of him, but we wish Coach Thomas the best of luck in his new position.
