Last week, Freddie Maggard opened up about his health in a powerful essay entitled, “I Wouldn’t Change A Thing.” For the past few years, the former Kentucky quarterback and KSR contributor has been dealing with cognitive issues that are now affecting his work and day-to-day life. Freddie is receiving treatment and therapy, and as part of his journey, bravely shared his story with Kentucky and KSR fans.

The outpouring of support from fans has been overwhelming in the days since. This morning, Freddie came on KSR to discuss his diagnosis — cognitive impairment, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and aphasia — and his new motto on life. Freddie admits he’s scared about the road ahead, but said sharing his story has lifted some weight off his shoulders.

“After writing that, I don’t have to try so hard to be me,” Freddie said. “The old me, what people are used to. And that’s a relief.”

After seeing several former teammates and friends pass away, Freddie is determined to fight back and hopes that his story will help others facing similar battles.

“The biggest thing for me for writing that article, and about being on here today, is to let folks know out there that are dealing with cognitive issues, emotional issues, or a broken leg, it’s okay to reach out and get help. And it’s okay to not be okay.”

Once again, I’m in awe of Freddie Maggard’s courage. We love you, Freddie.
