Georgia is national title contender again but struggles to cover big spreads

Kirby Smart has built one of the best college football programs in college football at his alma mater. The Bulldogs have won two national titles, three SEC titles, and have made four College Football Playoff appearance. The Dawgs are on the mountain but they haven’t gotten there by covering big numbers recently.
Since taking home consecutive national titles in 2021 and 2022, Georgia has struggled to cover spreads. These betting lines have gotten inflated due to UGA’s dominance and that has led to a 9-22-1 against the spread (ATS) record since the beginning of the 2023 season. Smart’s team typically fails to cover the number.
That poor cover percentage really shows up when UGA is a 20-point favorite or more. Georgia is now 0-15-1 ATS since 2022 in the regular season as a big favorite since beating Vanderbilt 55-0 as a 38-point favorite in October 2022, this program has produced quite the cover drought. The Bulldogs always win these games but have found themselves in close games in the fourth quarter. This streak started with a game against Kentucky.

In power conference games during this stretch, Georgia is 0-9 ATS with the margin of victory falling 13.4 points shy of the spread on average. Not only are the Bulldogs failing to cover these spreads, they are failing to meet pregame expectations by nearly two touchdowns. UGA failed to score enough total points to match the spread three times. Two of those games occurred against Kentucky.
Kentucky is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings of this series with covers as a 20-plus point underdog in 2019, 2021, and 2024. Are the Cats a live dog again at Sanford Stadium? Georgia is currently a 20.5-point favorite with a total of 48.5 at BetMGM.
