Has Cal turned Kentucky into "Center University"?

When John Calipari made the announcement that he was taking his talents from Memphis to Lexington, the BBN acquired the most sought after head coach in college basketball with an unmatched recruiting ability. In Coach Cal's four and a half year tenure at the reigns of college basketball's most dominant program, he has worked up quite a resume that speaks for itself. But the most impressive of all of the accolades Cal has reached has to be his ability to recruit and develop players for the next level; more specifically the center position. Let's take a look at some of the centers Calipari has made a part of the Big Blue Nation…   DeMarcus Cousins cousins    -4th overall recruit in 2009 (1st ranked center)    -15.1 ppg    -9.8 rpg   -1st team All-American   -5th pick in 2010 NBA Draft Coach Cal shot out of the gates in his first season with the nation's top center DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins came in with a great basketball body and tons of un-sculpted talent. Cal fine tuned his already dominant game. During his only season in Lexington, Cousins was arguably the most dominant big man in college basketball.   Enes Kanter    -25th overall recruit in 2010 (3rd ranked center)    -3rd pick in 2011 NBA Draft Although Enes Kanter was never able play a collegiate game because of NCAA infractions, Kanter developed his game through practices with John Calipari and grew from the 25th recruit in his class to the 3rd overall draft pick in 2010.   Anthony Davis davis    -1st overall recruit in 2011    -14.2 ppg    -10.4 rpg    -4.7 bpg    -1st team All-American    -NCAA Player of the Year    -1st pick in 2012 NBA Draft When you talk Kentucky basketball, Anthony Davis has to come to mind. Davis was the centerpiece of Kentucky’s latest National Championship victory in 2012 along with a long list of accolades as wide as his wingspan. Cal turned this former point guard into arguably the most dominant and iconic athlete in college basketball during his lone season at Kentucky.   Nerlens Noel noel 2    -1st overall recruit in 2012    -10.5 ppg    -9.5 rpg    -4.4 bpg    -6th pick in 2013 NBA Draft Nerlens Noel was said to be Anthony Davis 2.0 and lived up to that hype to a certain extent. Although his stats were slightly inferior to his predecessor at Kentucky, Noel could have been right there with Davis despite going down with a mid-season ACL injury.   Willie Cauley-Stein    -40th overall recruit in 2012 (11th ranked center)    -Freshmen                  -Sophomore    -8.3 ppg                       -9.6 ppg    -6.2 rpg                       - 8.4 rpg    -2.1 bpg                       -3.9 bpg Willie Cauley-Stein came from being the team's backup behind Nerlens Noel to taking the reigns as a veteran leader and starter this season. After Cal has continued to work with WCS, his scoring and rebounding stats significantly improved this season to accommodate his near impenetrable defense in the paint. Cauley-Stein is stepping up at the right time, which could position him to be yet another lottery pick as a Kentucky center.   Dakari Johnson johnson    -7th overall recruit in 2013 (2nd ranked center)    -5.1 ppg    -4.1 rpg Of course we have seen very little of Dakari Johnson thus far but his potential is through the roof. Cal brought in yet another one of the nation's top centers this year in Johnson and at at times he has shown signs of future dominance. Dakari needs some work and some conditioning of course, but he was the 7th overall recruit for a reason. If Cal can continue to improve Dakari as he has done so many times, Dakari Johnson could be one of the prized picks in a future NBA Draft.   Karl Towns towns    -6th overall recruit in 2014 (3rd ranked center) Karl towns was sure to be a Kentucky commit after being coached by John Calipari in the 2011 FIBA America Championships and the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men. Coming in as the 6th overall recruit for next season, the 7’1 Towns has the ability to be the best big man in his class. Karl Towns is a big man that can handle and shoot the ball like a small forward and go toe-to-toe with any big man in the country.  If Cal develops Towns the way we expect him to, he will be yet another great center coming out of Kentucky.   Seven centers of that caliber is unheard-of outside of the Bluegrass, which could contribute to why so many top centers want the name “Kentucky” across the front of their jersey and at this rate Cal has showed no signs of slowing down. I think it’s safe to say Coach Cal has turned Kentucky into “Center University.” What do you think?     @CodyDanielKSR
