How Kentucky commits performed during eighth week of high school football

We’re already coming up on the end of the high school football regular season. Eight weeks have passed us by now with only a handful of games left before postseason play begins for most states across the country.

For the Kentucky Wildcats and their 21 class of 2024 commitments (which currently ranks 24th in the nation), 18 of them were in action this past week. Only two of them faced by weeks (QB Cutter Boley and IOL Hayes Johnson) while another (RB Tovani Mizell) was sidelined yet again with what has been a season-long injury.

This week’s top performances came from the likes of four-star EDGE Brian Robinson (Kentucky’s latest pledge), four-star CB Terhyon Nichols, four-star WR Hardley Gilmore, three-star ATH Jiquavious Marshall, and three-star IOL Aba Selm. Kentucky commits Week 8 performances

Brian Robinson (EDGE) 6-5, 250 | Westerville North (Austintown, OH)
4-star: No. 131 overall, No. 9 EDGE

  • This is the first edition of this weekly post where we can include Brian Robinson, who finally committed to the Wildcats this past Wednesday. Suiting up for Westerville North (6-2), Robinson helped lead the Warriors to a 23-12 win over Big Walnut. The highlight of the game came from Robinson, who turned a tipped pass into an interception return for a touchdown, sealing the win for Westerville North. The Warriors scored 14 points in the final minute to complete the comeback.

Cutter Boley (QB) 6-5, 200 | Lexington Christian Academy (Hodgenville, KY)
4-star: No. 154 overall, No. 12 QB

  • Bye week for Cutter Boley and No. 7 Lexington Christian Academy (6-1). The Eagles will return to the field this Friday for a home game against WEB DuBois.

Terhyon Nichols (CB) 5-11, 185 | Withrow (Cincinnati, OH)
4-star: No. 193 overall, No. 22 CB

  • Terhyon Nichols and Withrow improved to 7-1 this year following a 46-6 smashing of Aiken on Friday. Statistics were not made available, but Hudl highlights show Nichols recording at least one tackle, nearly scoring a touchdown from a handoff and one off a short screen pass, and a 97-yard pick-6. Withrow will face a bye this week before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 20 against Western Hills.

Elijah Groves (LB) 6-3, 210 | East Robertson (Cross Plains, TN)
4-star: No. 249 overall, No. 24 LB

  • Elijah Groves and East Robertson also moved to 7-1 after shutting out Trousdale County 35-0. Groves had been posting monster stats on offense, defense, and special teams so far this season, but was limited to just two tackles (one solo) during Thursday’s win. East Robertson will take off this week before hosting White House-Heritage on Friday, Oct. 20.

Jerod Smith (DL) 6-3, 255 | Corbin (Corbin, KY)
4-star: No. 255 overall, No. 25 DL

  • Jerod Smith and the No. 2 Corbin Redhounds remain undefeated (7-0) following a 39-14 win over Letcher County Central on Friday. Jerod led the team in tackles with six total (five solo), three for loss, and one sack.

Jacob Smith (EDGE) 6-4, 230 | Corbin (Corbin, KY)
4-star: No. 278 overall, No. 21 EDGE

  • Jerod’s twin brother, Jacob Smith, chipped in three total tackles for Corbin, two of them solo. The Redhounds will hit the field again this Friday for a home game against Whitley County.

Hardley Gilmore (WR) 6-1, 165 | Pahokee (Belle Glade, FL)
4-star: No. 300 overall, No. 51 WR

  • Hardley Gilmore and Pahokee (4-3) lost a tough one on Friday night, falling to Atlantic 22-20 on the road. Gilmore, however, was terrific, finishing with 10 catches for 131 yards (both season highs) and one touchdown. Pahokee will hit the road again this Friday to take on Benjamin.

Tovani Mizell (RB) 6-1, 195 | Western (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
3-star: No. 532 overall, No. 42 RB

  • Tovani Mizell has missed all of the 2023 season so far due to injury and is not expected to return. His Western squad lost on Friday to American Heritage 28-14. They’ll suit up again on Friday for a road matchup against Cypress Bay.

Jiquavious Marshall (CB) 6-4, 180 | Westside (Macon, GA)
3-star: No. 556 overall, No. 57 ATH

  • Jiquavious Marshall and Westside improved to 5-1 with a 27-21 win over West Laurens on Friday. Statistics were not made available, but we do know that Marshall caught a 39-yard touchdown, hauled in a 21-yard reception for another score, and even added a third receiving touchdown in the second half. He also recorded a handful of tackles on defense. Westside secured this win with a defensive stand at the two-yard line in the closing moments. You can watch some of Marshall’s highlights through Hudl here. Westside will play again on Thursday against Griffin.

Devin Smith (LB) 6-1, 215 | Brunswick (Brunswick, GA)
3-star: No. 615 overall, No. 62 LB

  • Devin Smith and Brunswick now sit on a 4-2 record following Friday’s 46-22 win over Lakeside. Statistics were not made available. Brunswick will face a bye this week before taking the field again on Friday, Oct. 20 against South Effingham.

Aba Selm (IOL) 6-4, 295 | Simon Kenton (Independence, KY)
3-star: No. 623 overall, No. 52 IOL

  • Aba Selm and Simon Kenton won their third straight game on Friday with a high-scoring 50-36 victory over Great Crossing. Selm suited up on both sides of the field for the Pioneers, helping the Simon Kenton running backs rack up 210 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. On defense, he registered eight total tackles (seven solo), three tackles for loss, and one sack. The Pioneers (4-2) will play again on Friday at home against Campbell County.

David Washington Jr. (WR) 5-10, 180 | St. Joseph’s Prep School (Philadelphia, PA)
3-star: No. 810 overall, No. 126 WR

  • David Washington and St. Joseph’s Prep School now sit on a 5-1 record after demolishing La Salle College 42-6 on Friday. Statistics were not made available. St. Joseph’s will play again on Friday against Father Judge.

Caleb Redd (EDGE) 6-4, 220 | De Smet (Saint Louis)
3-star: No. 841 overall, No. 66 EDGE

  • Caleb Redd and De Smet remain undefeated (7-0) following Friday’s 26-0 shutout of St. Mary’s. Statistics were not made available, but Hudl highlights show Redd helping out on at least three sacks for the De Smet defense. The Spartans face a bye this week before hosting Edwardsville on Friday, Oct. 20.

Wille Rodriguez (TE) 6-4, 225 | Covington Catholic (Covington, KY)
3-star: No. 904 overall, No. 48 TE

  • Willie Rodriguez and No. 5 Covington Catholic will host this week’s KSR Kroger Game of the Week, which is set for Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. After missing the last few games due to injury, Rodriguez tells KSR that he will be ready to go this week as the Colonels look to remain undefeated (currently 7-0) after a 56-6 win over Grant County last Friday. Covington Catholic has won its last two games by a combined score of 117-6 despite missing Rodriguez.

Antwan Smith (LB) 6-3, 195 | Westlake (Atlanta, GA)
3-star: No. 937 overall, No. 89 LB

  • Antwan Smith and Westlake (6-1) continued their winning ways on Friday with a dominant 47-7 win over Pebblebrook. Smith was credited with three tackles, (two solo) in the victory. Westlake will face a bye this week before hitting the road on Friday, Oct. 20 to take on Carrolton.

Steven Soles (LB) 6-2, 215 | Powell (Powell, TN)
3-star: No. 942 overall, No. 90 LB

  • Steven Soles and Powell moved to 6-2 after making easy work of Knoxville Central in a 41-7 win. Statistics were not made available, but Soles posted a video of a massive hit on social media that you can watch below. As a whole, the Powell defense was credited with four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The Panthers also have a bye this week and will play again on Friday, Oct. 20 against McMinn County.

Lorenzo Cowan (EDGE) 6-3, 215 | Jenkins (Savannah, GA)
3-star: No. 1,092 overall, No. 87 EDGE

  • Lorenzo Cowan and Jenkins fell to 1-5 on the year after getting shutout, 56-0, by Ware County on Friday. Statistics were not made available, but Cowan did release a five-minute highlight video on Hudl that you can watch here.

Hayes Johnson (IOL) 6-3, 295 | Taylor County (Campbellsville, KY)
3-star: No. 1,111 overall, No. 104 IOL

  • Bye week for Hayes Johnson and 5-2 Taylor County. The Cardinals will return to action this Friday when they host North Laurel.

Quaysheed Scott (ATH) 6-0, 185 | Marion (Marion, SC)
3-star: No. 1,119 overall, No. 51 ATH

  • Quaysheed Scott and Marion (7-1) continue their winning ways after shutting out Kingstree on Friday, 34-0. Statistics were not made available. Marion will hit the road this Friday as they take on Lee Central.

Jadon Lafontant (IOL) 6-3, 315 | Brunswick School (Greenwich, CT)
3-star: No. 1,290 overall, No. 115 IOL

  • Jadon Lafontant and Brunswick School dropped to 1-3 following Saturday’s 31-21 loss to Avon Old Farms. Statistics were not made available. Brunswick School returns to action on Saturday for a home matchup against Suffield Academy.

Jacob Kauwe (K) 6-2, 200 | Billings West (Billings, MT)
3-star: No. 2,101 overall, No. 8 K

  • Jacob Kauwe and Billings West (4-3) snuck out a 20-14 win over Great Falls on Thursday. Kauwe was credited with four touchbacks on all four of his kickoffs and four punts for a total of 87 yards (long of 50). He hit both of his point after attempts but went 0-2 on field goals. Billings West will return to action on Friday against Gallatin.
