Huggins says he's friends with Calipari because "he tries to dress like Rick"
John Calipari and Bob Huggins’ friendship will be a popular topic over the next few days, and when asked why he first befriended Calipari, Huggy Bear made a weird joke.
“I think because he tries to dress like Rick,” Huggins said on today’s Big 12 Teleconference.
One would assume Huggins is referring to Rick Pitino, who shares Calipari’s taste in fine Italian suits while Huggins prefers track suits. Even though the Pitino/Calipari rivalry is now defunct, way to get in a friendly jab there, Huggy Bear.
Huggins said he first met Calipari through Joe Fryz, Cal’s high school teammate that played college ball with Huggins at West Virginia back in the 1970s.

“We got to be pretty good friends. Obviously, I’m older than what Cal is, but I would see him at Five Star [Basketball Camp], and we’d spend time on the road. We’ve done seemingly hundreds of charity events together. We’ve had a great relationship since the 1970s.”
With Calipari joining Huggins at his charity fish fry tomorrow night, get ready to hear about their friendship a lot before tip off on Saturday, especially the story about how Cal’s cousin helped save Huggins’ life in 2002:
