I’m pretty sure this Dicky Lyons hit was targeting

My how times have changed. Last Saturday we saw Kash Daniel earn an ejection and a suspension for his hit on a defenseless South Carolina player. It was unnecessary, but the jury is out on whether or not it was helmet to helmet. It doesn't matter, though, because in this day and age, targeting has a broad definition and will be called for what used to be celebrated as a great hit. Speaking of which, remember that time Dicky Lyons Jr. took LSU safety Craig Steltz's head off? Oh man, what a fond memory for this UK fan. It came against Kentucky's upset of the No. 1 Tigers in 2007 and it was as vicious of a hit as you'll ever see. He tried to give Steltz a very public execution. It's wild to hear the excitement in Gary Donaldson's voice as he describes the hit on the broadcast. If Lyons were to make that play today, I'm pretty sure he would get like five years in a maximum security prison and he would be banned from football for life. At the very least it would be one of the headlines from college football that day and Lyons would be vilified. But back then, it was a beautiful shot to the chin strap by ol' DLJ and it got Commonwealth Stadium roaring as the Cats went back and forth with the eventual national champion. I wouldn't be opposed to UK putting a statue of the hit outside the stadium one day.
