Waterworks Warning: Incredible Documentary Details Josh Paschal's Victory over Cancer

It’s a moment I’ll never forget. Behind the podium at the 2018 Kentucky football media day, Mark Stoops revealed that Josh Paschal was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. The announcement shook the room, and yet a few years later, another announcement got the Kroger Field crowd to its feet: “The tackle is made by Kentucky’s Josh Paschal!”
You probably remember this story very well. Now it’s being told through a brighter lens.
As a part of the NFL’s Crucial Catch initiative, a project with the American Cancer Society to emphasize the importance of early cancer detection, the Detroit Lions put the spotlight on the talented defensive end in their latest edition of “Inside the Den.” It’s an outstanding 30-minute documentary that tells Paschal’s story in great detail.
The camera crews spent time with Josh in Lexington, reliving his trials and tribulations. They spoke with anybody and everybody around the program, from his coaches and trainers to his doctors, who all personally attested to the strength he showed throughout his fight against cancer.
Even though he remained confident throughout his fight, it didn’t come without lows. His sister recalled a day when he broke down after a practice when he learned that he wasn’t the same player that he was before the diagnosis. He was stuck back at ground zero and had to relearn how to be an All-SEC athlete.
Vince Marrow recalled a moment during a church service when Paschal had to step out because his foot hurt too badly. Josh Allen stayed with them as the younger Josh tried to fight through the pain. That’s when Paschal said something Vince will never forget. “A lot of people couldn’t handle this. I really believe God put me in this position to handle this.”

He fought through to get back onto the field, and when he was put into the starting lineup against Middle Tennessee State, Brad White struggled to compartmentalize his emotions. Paschal made one of the first tackles of the game, and the crowd erupted.
“I tried to constantly push myself to stay joyful throughout the whole time because I wasn’t going to let cancer win,” Paschal said.
Even though the cancer is gone, he’s had to remain vigilant with annual scans. Last fall, a PET scan revealed masses in his shoulder. Fortunately, after further investigation, they learned the spots were benign.
Paschal is using his experience to shine a light on others who may not know that a cancer battle lies ahead. He’s spreading the word, and this documentary is one of the best vehicles you will see. Just prepare to get emotional, because oh boy, it’s a doozy.
