Is a spot about to open three days before signing day?

by:Matt Wheatley02/01/14
michaelmathis While it appeared that the commitment of Matt Elam was the official close of this historic class, this years game of Yahtzee might not be done yet for Mark Stoops.  It appears possible that Michael Mathis, a three star athlete expected to play cornerback at UK, may not be a part of the festivities on national signing day.  At this point, all we can do is speculate as to what the reason for Mathis' wavering is but grades have been a source of concern in the past.  Yesterday, Mathis posted these tweets to his twitter account: The loss of Mathis would certainly be felt, however, it may open a spot for a player  that is higher up the board for this staff.  Lloyd Tubman for instance, a three star defensive end out of Louisville currently committed to Penn State, has been linked to Kentucky since James Franklin's departure from Vanderbilt.  If Mathis is unable to sign or chooses not to (which I expect the staff probably already knows what will happen), a signature from Tubman would be big.  His commitment and flip from Penn State would give the Cats signatures from 4 out of the top 5 players in the state of Kentucky according to 247 sports. Could there be some signing day excitement in the cards for Kentucky?
