Is Jamin Davis a top 20 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?

One of the biggest risers in this season’s pre-draft process has been none other than former Wildcat star Jamin Davis. After a stellar pro day and some eye-popping athletic testing, the 6-4 linebacker has planted himself firmly in the first-round conversation for this week’s NFL Draft. But after the recent input of yet another draft analyst, Davis could be locked in as a top-20 pick.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer shared his opinion on the former All-SEC player a couple of days ago, noting how Davis could surprise people with how high he’s selected.

One player that's pretty clearly put himself in good position going into draft week: Kentucky LB Jamin Davis. I think he's got a real good shot to be the guy that turns people's heads with how high he goes.

In a recent mock draft, SB Nation writers had the Washington Football Team nabbing Davis with the 19th overall pick, adding a new threat to an already monstrous defense. Washington has a hole at linebacker after losing Kevin Pierre-Louis in free agency and stands a lot to gain by adding a versatile threat like Davis to a defense that consists of stars like young defensive linemen Chase Young and Montez Sweat and strong cornerbacks Kendall Fuller and William Jackson III.

Here’s what SB Nation had to say about the selection:

First, he’s a true sideline-to-sideline defender, who can shoot the gap, track a jet sweep or zone stretch, and pursue from the backside and cover the cutback. Second, he can play in the box, or excel in space as a positionless defender in coverage. Third, he’s excellent on Green-Dog, Cross-Dog or A-Smash blitzes, or off the edge where he can use his speed and bend. Finally, he’s still growing as a true off-the-ball linebacker, and his best days are ahead of him.

The likes of Danny Trevathan, Avery Williamson, Wesley Woodyard, Za’Darius Smith, and Bud Dupree have shown Kentucky linebackers make for solid NFL players. Come Thursday, Davis will find out where he’ll be trying to make his case to join that talented Big Blue fraternity. Washington would be a fun place for the former Wildcat to blossom, but it certainly isn’t his only potential suitor.
