The vibes were high all game long, until an apparent injury to starting point guard Jaland Lowe sucked the life out of Memorial Coliseum.

On Friday night in Lexington, the Blue team beat the White team 35-26 in the Kentucky men’s basketball preseason Blue-White scrimmage. Lowe, who led the White team with nine points, went down early in the second half of action, holding his right shoulder before walking off the floor and straight to the locker room. He was playing well before the incident happened, too.

Head coach Mark Pope gave a brief update afterward: “He tweaked his shoulder, so we’ll see. We sat him down out of precaution. We’ll know more tomorrow.” It certainly wasn’t what the Big Blue Nation wanted to see from their floor general a few weeks out from the season-opener.

Otherwise, the basketball was fun! SEC Preseason Player of the Year Otega Oweh, who returned to practice this week after a 10-week recovery from turf toe, showed flashes of his usual tough self. Jasper Johnson, Andrija Jelavić, and Trent Noah all knocked down a pair of three-pointers while Mo Dioubate was being a bully inside. But it’s hard to leave the gym feeling too giddy when Lowe’s status is now unclear.

The first half was close early on before the Blue team began to run up the score. A handful of three-pointers from Johnson and Noah on the Blue team brought the crowd alive. Jelavić also got in on the fun later in the first half, pouring in a couple of triples on his own. Halfway through, Lowe was leading all scorers with seven points for the White team, and he found Reece Potter for an easy dunk off a pretty pick-and-roll to add to the highlight reel.

But it was the Blue team, shooting 50 percent from the field and 5-8 from deep, holding a commanding 26-14 lead at the intermission. Pope announced that the second half would be strictly an Elam Ending finish; the first team to reach 34 points deemed the winner.

After going ahead 30-17, the bad luck struck as Lowe appeared to get tangled up with Oweh. Lowe was favoring his right shoulder and was immediately helped to the back by trainer Brandon Wells. A hush came over the crowd as nervous energy consumed the fanbase, but we still had a scrimmage to finish.

Johnson nailed another three to put the Blue team one point away from the win. Dioubate would add a few more buckets to keep it close for the White team, but Jelavić would polish off the Blue team’s 35-26 victory with a dunk in transition. Johnson led all scorers with 10 points while Dioubate and Jelavić added eight points apiece.

The story everyone will be talking about, however, is Lowe’s shoulder.

UPDATE: Mark Pope said Lowe tweaked his shoulder and sat out the rest of the game as a precaution. UK should know more tomorrow.
