The fifth-straight Governor’s Cup victory has produced a couple of weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference for two Kentucky Wildcats.

J.J. Weaver was named Co-Defensive Player of the week Barion Brown was tabbed Co-Special Teams Player of the Week by the SEC.

In his final game in his hometown, Weaver had one of his best performances as a Wildcat. The Kentucky EDGE had eight tackles and a sack, all while making game-changing plays in the second half of the upset over No. 9 Louisville. He forced a fumble and recovered the ball to set up a game-tying field goal. On the next possession Weaver recovered a fumble, leading to a go-ahead touchdown for the Wildcats.

Weaver was selected as MVP of the Governor’s Cup. He’s the first defensive player from the University of Kentucky to receive the Howard Schnellenberger Award from the Louisville Sports Commission.

Kentucky’s comeback was fueled by another outstanding special teams play from Barion Brown. Trailing 17-7 after a long Louisville scoring drive in the third quarter, the sensational sophomore wide receiver went untouched, sprinting 100 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. He finished the game with 250 all-purpose yards.

With the touchdown, Brown tied a pair of school records: Craig Yeast for most kickoff return touchdowns in a career (3) and Derek Abney for most kickoff return touchdowns in a season (2).

Kentucky’s 38-31 victory over No. 9 Louisville is the highest-ranked win of the Mark Stoops era. The Cats have now won five straight Governor’s Cups and six of the last seven. Louisville has not defeated Kentucky in their home stadium since 2014.
