Andy Staples And James Fletcher On John Calipari's Future At Kentucky | 03.25.24

The Big Blue Nation is still playing the waiting game following Kentucky’s latest first-round NCAA Tournament loss to a double-digit seed. Head coach John Calipari spent the weekend in New Jersey, but is scheduled to return to Lexington on Monday. A meeting with Kentucky Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart is expected to follow.

What will happen in that meeting is still unknown. Either Calipari will return for year 16 at Kentucky or Barnhart will immediately begin a coaching search to find the next leader of the men’s basketball program. However, a decision needs to be made soon.

Calipari’s weekly radio show is scheduled to take place on Monday evening. The Lexington Herald-Leader’s Ben Roberts is reporting that the Kentucky head coach is still scheduled to make an appearance on the show.

“Calipari is still planning to be on the air with UK broadcaster Tom Leach for what will be the final coach’s show of the 2023-24 season, the Herald-Leader has confirmed,” according to Roberts. “The show is scheduled to air at 6 p.m. on WLAP 630-AM in Lexington.”

“Calipari typically takes calls from fans during his coach’s show, but it’s unlikely that will happen Monday night. The coach is expected to appear on the show via telephone — not in person — which is not uncommon for the show that follows UK’s season-ending losses.”

John Calipari is Kentucky’s head men’s basketball coach until he isn’t. Assistant coaches are telling current players and recruits that the staff will be back for the 2024-25 season. That is what should be happening in the moment. Eventually, we will hear from the university about the basketball program’s future. For now, Kentucky is operating like normal. The waiting game rolls on.

The weekly radio show appearance is on the schedule. Will that change? We will find out soon.
