This could be a pivotal day for John Calipari’s future at Kentucky, with all eyes on Lexington to see what athletics director Mitch Barnhart will do in the wake of another NCAA Tournament first-round loss. The city’s flagship newspaper is off to a rough start.

John Clay’s column about Calipari’s buyout is on the front page of the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Monday edition, above the top fold. Unfortunately, Calipari’s last name is misspelled, with a “K” instead of a “C”:

Ouch. It’s important to note that the error is not Clay’s. According to Josh Moore, a former Herald-Leader reporter, the Herald-Leader hasn’t had a local copy desk for at least five to six years, so the blunder is at the hands of a copy editor in parts unknown. Still, what a slip-up regarding arguably the most famous person in college basketball. Facts and grammar are still optional here at KSR, but I feel for our colleagues on a high-visibility day.

Latest on Calipari’s future at Kentucky

So, what will Kentucky do with “Kalipari”? Last night, Matt Jones hosted a Twitter Space in which he shared that Calipari flew home with the team on Thursday night and then immediately to his beach home in New Jersey. He is expected to return today for a face-to-face meeting with Barnhart, during which his future could be decided. Jones confirmed the timeline to start today’s radio show.

“I think tonight is the night, one way or the other,” Jones said this morning. “We find out either tonight or tomorrow.”

Speaking of radio shows, Calipari’s is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET tonight on 630 WLAP. Whether or not Calipari sits alongside Tom Leach or Mitch Barnhart takes his place remains to be seen. That alone could signal which way this thing goes. Stay tuned…
