Earlier this afternoon, the bombshell dropped that Jai Lucas is leaving Kentucky to be an assistant on Jon Scheyer’s staff at Duke. John Calipari is now sharing his thoughts on the news with the Big Blue Nation. In a statement on social media, Calipari writes that Lucas informed him of his decision yesterday and he fully supports him because he’s doing what’s best for his family.

“Yesterday, Jai informed me he was taking a promotion at another school. I asked where and when he told me Duke, he expected me to be mad. I support what he thinks is best for his family. He’s been loyal, terrific on the road, and great for our players, and I want what’s best for him. So, I’m good with it.

“I am not surprised that there was interest in Jai because there is always interest in our staff. This year, all of our assistants have been approached about other opportunities. You have a great staff, that’s what happens!”

Calipari likes to take the high road in these situations, even when it comes to Duke, it seems. Elsewhere in Lexington, CJ Fredrick tweeted a bunch of crying emojis, which could be a response to Lucas’ departure.

Lucas joined Kentucky’s staff in August 2020 as a special assistant to John Calipari. A month later, he became an on-court assistant. Over the past two seasons, he served as the primary recruiter for Cason Wallace, Shaedon Sharpe, Daimion Collins, and Sahvir Wheeler. Orlando Antigua and Chin Coleman are now Kentucky’s two on-court assistants, with the third seat now up for grabs.
