Jon Sumrall to make decision on future on Sunday -- with Florida, Ole Miss and LSU emerging

The major dominoes are about to start falling, potentially as soon as this afternoon once the dust settles on the Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State in Starkville. It’s been an eventful day already with news breaking that Lane Kiffin is set to decide between returning to Oxford and taking his coaching talents to LSU.

A fan favorite in Lexington could be up next, Jon Sumrall set to make a decision on his future this weekend, as well — and it could be wherever Kiffin does not end up. With Florida removed from consideration for the current Ole Miss coach, could they make a move on the former Kentucky linebacker who was on Mark Stoops’ staff in Lexington from 2019-21? On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting that the Gators are turning their attention toward the 43-year-old.

And depending on Kiffin’s decision, he could be a top candidate at Ole Miss or LSU, as well, sources tell Nakos, along with On3’s Chris Low and Brett McMurphy.

Sumrall had been seen as a top candidate at Auburn, but Nakos reports that “talks between the two have cooled off in recent days” — though he’s not ruling out a move to The Plains.

Florida is also considering Washington’s Jedd Fisch and Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, according to On3’s
Zach Abolverdi.

Although Kentucky’s matchup at Louisville could technically shake things up, it’s obviously a massive blow to Big Blue Nation members who wanted Mitch Barnhart to make a move on Stoops to bring home the alum widely considered to be the hottest up-and-coming name in coaching right now. It’s even worse knowing the options are a quarter of the SEC, two being UK opponents in 2026 in Florida and LSU, followed by the other two, Auburn and Ole Miss, in 2027 (plus the Gators).

Could Sumrall go from beloved former Wildcat to permanent SEC rival? We’re trending in that direction, folks.
