Josh Kattus was a surprising star as a true freshman at the University of Kentucky. The Cincinnati Moeller product was the lowest-ranked recruit in Kentucky’s star-studded 2022 recruiting class, yet his impact was felt on day one. A head-hunting tight end, he carved out a niche in Vince Marrow‘s room as one of the best blockers on the edge of the Big Blue Wall.

“It was something that my Dad always harped on me about was that you don’t stop until the whistle blows. You don’t stop blocking until the whistle blows,” he told KSR’s 11 Personnel, “and that’s something I’ve carried on with me through high school. You could see it early on with my tape.

“That’s something I do take pride on because that’s the physical toughness with the game, just trying to wear people out for four quarters. That’s something I’ve always brought with me and I think it’s a valuable skill in my game. It’s fun, it’s fun to go out there and do that.”

You don’t hear that often, “blocking is fun.” But that’s what you get from Kattus.

It’s only June but he’s already chomping at the bit to put pads back on. We last saw him stiff-arming a Louisville Cardinal to Pikeville. He underwent surgery in the offseason, forcing him to miss the Music City Bowl and spring practice, but he’ll be 100% ready to roll by the time fall camp starts in late July.

“We’re ramping up workouts right now,” said the second-year sophomore. “I’m feeling really good, really explosive, so I’m really excited when it comes to August to get those pads on. I’ve been waiting a long time for that.”

Meet Josh Kattus and his Kentucky Football Teammates

Like many University of Kentucky athletes, Josh Kattus is putting his Name, Image and Likeness to work. This week he’s teaming up with some of his fellow Wildcats to put animals in homes across Central Kentucky.

On Wednesday night he’ll be joined by D’Eryk Jackson, Trevin Wallace, Izayah Cummings and Marques Cox at Evans Orchard for the Summer Solstice Celebration. In addition to the crafts, live music, food and drinks, the Wildcats are bringing a dozen pitbull puppies and other dogs from the Scott County Humane Society. You can catch them from 5-8:30 pm on Wednesday. Can’t make it? This Saturday Dane Key and the Dingle brothers are joining the crew at Country Boy Brewing in Georgetown from 3-6 pm for another adoption event.

Kattus loves dogs, particularly the two English mastiffs at his home in Cincinnati, and using his NIL rights to meet Kentucky football fans.

“For me personally, I just enjoy getting out in the community and doing different events like the dog adoptions that we got going on tomorrow and Saturday, just helping out the city of Lexington,” Kattus said. “(NIL) is starting to become more clear and guys are starting to use their name, image and likeness more on this team.”
