Josie Gilvin ready to 'step up to the standard' in lone season playing for Kentucky WBB

Josie Gilvin had a pretty solid year at WKU before transferring to Kentucky this offseason. The 6-foot guard averaged 13.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.4 assists per game last season while knocking down 41.3% of her three-point attempts, also being named to the Conference USA All-Defense team.

However, it’ll be interesting to see how much of that production translates at Kentucky. After all, the SEC is a completely different beast than Conference USA. One thing is for certain though, Gilvin isn’t ducking any smoke. She knows it’s going to take her best if she wants to make an impact at Kentucky.

“You just kind of have to be ready to step up to the plate and step up to the standard,” Gilvin said during Kentucky’s media day. “So, just getting into it, just knowing that this is gonna be a process, but if you wanna get on the train, you can get on the train and get along with everyone. It’s been a great culture, great people to be around — especially great coaches. I feel like they set the standard because they want you to get better. So, just having them has been a lot better.”

This summer, Gilvin has been working on some of the more refined parts of her game, like communication and absorbing and applying information, for example.

“I’d say [I’m working on] just listening to my teammates, listening to my coaches, and taking in detail and actually applying it,” the Louisville native added. “You can hear something and you can do it once or twice, but applying it to every single rep, every single practice and doing it when people are not telling you to do something.”

“I knew it was going to be hard,” Gilvin noted. “I knew it was going to be different, but that’s something that I entered the transfer portal for. I wanted this opportunity. So, I was excited to be uncomfortable and just grow as a player.”
