The Kentucky running back room is getting lighter this offseason. JuTahn McClain announced he is entering the transfer portal. The grad transfer will have two years of eligibility remaining.

McClain served as a change of pace back throughout his Kentucky career, primarily playing second-fiddle to Chris Rodriguez and Ray Davis. In four seasons he recorded 643 yards on 135 carries and one rushing touchdown. This fall he only toted the rock 26 times for 138 yards.

McClain had exceptional pass-catching skills, carving out a role as a weapon on third down. He caught 27 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns in his career. Arguably the most impressive play of his time at Kentucky was a 25-yard touchdown reception on a wheel-route from Will Levis against LSU. It was first game back after he and five others were suspended for an off-the-field altercation with a fraternity.

Hailing from the Cincinnati suburb of Fairfield, McClain was a four-star prospect when he signed with the Wildcats in the 2020 recruiting class. In his prolific prep career he rushed for 4,406 yards and 53 touchdowns while catching 48 passes for 680 yards and seven scores.

This departure means Kentucky will be losing three running backs from the 2023 squad. Ray Davis declared for the NFL Draft and Ramon Jefferson‘s eligibility expires. Demie-Sumo-Karngbaye will be Kentucky’s leading returner next fall, and he only tallied 20 carries, spending a bulk of his snaps lining up at wide receiver. The Cats will have three freshmen in Jay Boulware’s room next fall, but you can expect Kentucky to explore the transfer portal for reinforcements this offseason.
