Karl-Anthony Towns is in the midst of one of his greatest seasons as a pro. The Minnesota Timberwolves have the best record in the Western Conference. With six weeks left in the regular season, Towns is being sent to the sideline with a knee injury.

Shams Charania reports Towns has suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee and is out indefinitely. “Towns has been gathering second opinions on the meniscus tear over the last 24 hours,” said Charania.

Allow me to be candid for a moment. I’m not a doctor, but I do know a decent amount about knee injuries. They happen quite a bit in the sports I cover for a living. The meniscus is the least significant of all possible knee tears. Football players often play through minor meniscus tears. Obviously, the knee goes through a different type of stress for basketball players, but this is an injury that can require as little as six weeks of recovery time.

TL;DR: This injury sucks for Karl Towns, but there’s a very good chance you will see him playing in the NBA Playoffs.

This year Towns is averaging 22.1 points per game while shooting 50.6% from the field and 42.3% from behind the three-point line. It’s the best three-point shooting season of the former Wildcat’s nine-year NBA career. An NBA All-Star selection last month, his fourth All-Star appearance, Towns is also grabbing 8.4 rebounds and dishing out 3.0 assists per game.

Minnesota is currently first in the Northwest Division and tied with the Thunder at 43-19 for the top spot in the Western Conference. Only the Boston Celtics have a better record in the NBA. The regular season wraps up on April 14.
