Ty Bryant is the latest in a long line of future Wildcats to win the Paul Hornung Award. Given each year since 1993 by the Louisville Quarterback Club, it’s one of four annual honors awarded to the best high school football player in the state of Kentucky.

“You always think about winning awards like that. It motivates you to be your best and that is good for any player,” Ty Bryant tells Larry Vaught. “I think I have had a very good season. I know we have had so many big wins that most games I didn’t play but about a half but I never worried about individual numbers. Kentucky coaches know how our season went and why numbers don’t show all I have done or my team has done.”

Bryant’s numbers are deceiving because he does a little bit of everything for Frederick Douglass High School. On special teams he has returned three punts for touchdowns. This year Ty Bryant became the school’s all-time leading tackler, now up to 268, and the safety has a pair of defensive scores. Also a running back, last week he played the role of hero by tallying 106 rushing yards and scoring the go-ahead touchdown to beat Woodford County and secure a spot in the 5A state semifinals for the unbeaten Broncos.

Bryant is the third consecutive Frederick Douglass player to receive the award, following to other Cats, Dane Key and Jager Burton. The son of former UK defensive back, Cisco Bryant, Ty has been a long-time Kentucky football commit, pledging his allegiance to the Wildcats in August of 2021.

A three-star prospect, he’s the No. 11 prospect in the state of Kentucky according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Bryant plans on enrolling at Kentucky in January. He’ll return to the gridiron Friday night at 6 pm when Frederick Douglass hosts Owensboro. The Broncos are two wins away from securing the school’s first state championship.
