Kentucky Derby Experts Share Two Different Handicapping Angles

Just like skinning cats, there are many ways to pick a horse. Picking a pony based on a pretty name can sometimes be just as effective as the expert who gets lost in the program. Ahead of Kentucky Derby 150, we’re trying to find the middle ground by speaking to veteran horse-players who are taking different approaches when picking this race.

Experienced horsemen can identify a winner by just looking at a horse’s gait. WAVE-3’s John Boel doesn’t include himself among those experts, but sometimes during Derby week, there are unavoidable signs calling you to wager on a horse.

KSR spoke with the veteran Louisville TV journalist who found himself drawn to one physically impressive Kentucky Derby runner while traveling through the backside of the track. Once all in on Fierceness, he might be compelled to make a last-minute change before the horses enter the starting gate.

We also did something unexpected to preview the race: sought advice from a Louisville Cardinal. Following his days on the hardwood, David Levitch spent most of his time in the paddock. Now known as the “Paddock Prince,” he creates daily tip sheets for bettors at Horse Racing Nation. Levitch was kind enough to share a few favorite picks from his tip sheet, but only after sharing some thoughts on how the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby will unfold this weekend.
