Kentucky Derby Viewership Numbers Make History

by:Brent Wainscott05/02/21

All eyes were on Churchill Downs on Saturday. 15 million sets of eyes, in fact.

On Sunday afternoon, it was reported that an average of 15 million people tuned into the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby, NBC’s most-watched event since the NFL Divisional Round in January.

For the first time ever, the Kentucky Derby had more viewers than all award shows. Eat it, Grammys.

This report is massive news as the world starts to turn back to normalcy. Last year, all sporting event viewership was down, including the Kentucky Derby, which clocked in at 9.8 million, down from 16.3 million in 2019.

The numbers are starting to trend in the right direction.
