Kentucky Fares Poorly in CFN's FBS Rankings

Don’t worry, he’s just smiling because he found a piece of candy in his pocket.

Did you know that Kentucky football is currently not ranked in the Top 25?  That may or may not surprise you, depending on whether you’ve watched any football this season, or read anything in the paper, or been awake in the last month, but it’s a hundred percent true.

But did you also know that Kentucky football is currently not ranked in the top 100?  That one may come as a bit more of a surprise.  But as KSR reader @UKBerry pointed out to me yesterday, according to College Football News Kentucky is the 102nd best team in the nation.  That’s so low, actually, that if you were to do a Bottom 25, with the worst team as #1, Kentucky would be #23.  We’re in the Bizarro-Top 25.  We’re in the fifth of the class that makes the other four-fifths possible.  Is any of this getting the point across?  We’re really bad.

In fact, we’re the lowest-ranked BCS school by 10 places.  The next-lowest is Washington State at #92, under the dubious Mike Leach.  We’re immediately below heavyweights like Florida International, SMU, and Akron, and right above Troy and Bowling Green.  The victim of our single victory so far this season, Kent State, is sitting pretty at #105.

So, this is bad, but what does it mean for Kentucky?  Well, unfortunately, this doesn’t catch me off guard too much.  I’d like to say I’m a little incredulous, but I’m really not.  This might be one of the lowest points Kentucky football has had in many years, and the light doesn’t look much brighter with the SEC schedule in full swing.  November 17th holds some promise, as the Samford Bulldogs come to Commonwealth Stadium for a hopefully-enjoyable home game.

Until you realize that Samford is 4-0 and sitting atop the Southern Conference.

Is there a happy ending to this season?  Or, better question, what’s the best we can hope at this point?  Personally, I’ve resigned myself to just rooting for Washington State to lose horribly, so that we can at least say we’re not the worst BCS team.

At this rate, that may take a while.
