Vegas has spoken and Kentucky will be a heavy favorite in Wednesday’s game vs. Florida A&M. The line opened at Cats -37.5, with the total set at 110 points.

Kentucky (7-3) is 4-6 against the spread this season, only covering vs. Howard (-25), Duquesne (-19), South Carolina State (-39.5), and North Florida (-27.5). The Cats have failed to cover and gone under the point total in their last four games. Meanwhile, Florida A&M (2-7) is 4-3 against the spread, 4-1 in the last five games. The Rattlers may be one of the worst college basketball teams on paper, but they covered vs. Louisville (+18.5), Georgia (+25.5), Miami (+32), and Oregon State (+18.5).

Year Two of the Unity Series

The Florida A&M game is the second in the five-year Unity Series, matchups between Kentucky and institutions from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which is made up of historically black colleges and universities. The games will seek to raise awareness of the missions of the HBCUs and to raise funds to provide opportunities for students at their institutions. Last year, Kentucky hosted Southern in the inaugural game of the Unity Series, winning 76-64.

On Monday, players, coaches, and staff from both Kentucky and Florida A&M visited the National Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati.

Honoring Reggie Warford

This season, Kentucky and the SWAC will honor Unity Series Legends, representatives from each school who have a history as a trailblazer in diversity, equity, and inclusion. This year’s legends are Kentucky’s Reggie Warford and Florida A&M’s Clemon Johnson. Warford was the first Black men’s basketball player to graduate from the University of Kentucky. After a standout career at Drakesboro High School in Muhlenburg County, Warford played for Kentucky from 1973-76 and was a member of the NIT Championship squad in 1976 and the 1975 NCAA Tournament’s runner-up team. He passed away in May of 2022.

Johnson played at Florida A&M from 1974-78 and was selected 44th in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He played in the league for 10 seasons and won an NBA title with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983. Following his playing career, Johnson coached at Alaska Fairbanks and Florida A&M (2007-11). He also helped establish a Boys and Girls Club in his hometown of Monticello, Florida, and is currently creating interest in refurbishing the old high school gymnasium in Monticello with intentions of establishing an after-school program concentrating on reading and writing, sports training and creating a community center in the area.
