Kentucky Football History: The Air Raid Offense

If you enjoy the intricacies of football than you should definitely follow @SmartFootball on twitter. The guy who mans the account, Chris Brown, is probably the biggest football nerd on the face of the planet. He is the editor of SmartFootball.com and wrote the book Essential Smart Football which has been a huge hit among football journalists. Brown recently dove into the history of the "Air Raid Offense." This is the offense that Kentucky Football used during the Hal Mumme tenure and contributed to Tim Couch being the first overall pick in 1999 NFL Draft. Brown talks about how the offense evolved from its beginning at Iowa Wesleyan to BYU to Kentucky and now a version of it at West Virginia with Dana Holgorson. Here's some super neat footage of Mumme explaining the offense back when he was coach of the Wildcats: Part two of this talk is in the article. Also, there is a number of clips from the old days of Couch tearing up defenses, including the win over Alabama in 1997. It's a pretty outstanding article that I suggest for fellow football nerds. Brown does a tremendous job explaining the offense and how it's developed over the years.
