One of the state’s top high school football players is trimming his list during the dead period. Kentucky is one of the ten schools under consideration for Isaac “Spike” Sowells.

A center for Chris Wolfe at Louisville Male High School, Sowells is the fourth-ranked player in the state, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Rivals ranks Sowells as the No. 5 offensive center in the country.

Sowells celebrated President’s Day by unveiling a top 10 list. It includes Kentucky, Louisville, Penn State, Miami, NC State, West Virginia, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and his father’s former team, Indiana. Big Ike Sowells was a fourth round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Spike visited seven of his ten finalists prior to the start of the dead period. That included a trip to Kentucky for the Wildcats’ Junior Day, his first opportunity to meet new offensive line coach Eric Wolford.

“Him being a Bama guy, coming from Kentucky the first time, it was great to finally meet him and see what his idea was for me,” Sowells told KSR+.

“He seems like a really great coach. He’s a little stern but seems like a great guy. He’s got a little bit of joyfulness to him and he knows what the plan is for me. The biggest thing is to get some shine back on the Big Blue Wall.”

Sowells hosted multiple Kentucky coaches in January, including head coach Mark Stoops. Louisville’s head coach, Jeff Brohm, also made the trek to Male High School, once a primary recruiting pipeline for the Cards.

In addition to the in-state schools, Sowells has trips planned to a few ACC programs that have relentlessly recruited him. He tells 247 Sports’ Allen Trieu that he will spend a weekend in March at NC State and Miami.

A top priority for the Cats, Vince Marrow has put Kentucky in a solid spot before official visits get underway in June. Sowells, an All-State selection as a junior, expects to make a decision prior to his senior season at Male.
