Kentucky entered Saturday’s game as a 23.5-point favorite. However, in a way, they played the role of spoiler against Tennessee Tech.

Tennessee Tech’s loss to Kentucky on Saturday snapped a 15-game winning streak for the program. Even as a heavy underdog, Tennessee Tech head coach Bobby Wilder was very disappointed by the loss.

“I’m disappointed with the loss. I hate losing,” Wilder said during his postgame press conference. “The team hates losing, which means the standard at Tennessee Tech has changed. Losing a 15-game winning streak, [the] longest in the nation, our first loss of the season, 10-1.”

It’s not just Wilder that’s disappointed. It’s his whole team.

“They’re disappointed they lost. I love how we played,” Wilder said. “We competed every play in this game, and the standard for Tennessee Tech football is elite effort every single play. I felt that today: how hard we played.”

The SEC Has Been Elite Against FCS Programs

If you’ve been following college football, especially the SEC, Saturday’s result should come as no surprise. As Bobby Wilder pointed out, entering Saturday’s game, FCS teams were 0-62 versus Power Four opponents, losing by an average score of 50-9. The FCS was 0-11 versus the SEC, losing by an average score of 50-6.

“Relatively speaking, 42-10 doesn’t seem as bad, but it’s still a loss, and we don’t like losing now at Tennessee Tech,” Wilder said. “That’s the new standard.”

It’s not all doom and gloom for Wilder. He saw some good things out there for his Tennessee Tech team.

“I’m extremely proud of some things I saw out there today. No. 1: The performance of our offensive line against an SEC front,” Wilder said. “We were able to block them, we ran the ball successfully, and we protected Kekoa [Visperas]. He played at a high level today. We started out, we had two three-and-outs, then we consistently drove the ball throughout the game.”

Wilder points towards Kentucky having multiple 10, 11, or 12-play drives as evidence of his defense standing strong. He said Tennessee Tech made Kentucky “earn everything they got in this game.”

“I believe they had four explosive plays total out of 66 plays, which again, versus an SEC team, was an accomplishment for us,” Wilder said. “Overall, I’m pleased with the effort in this game. I’m pleased with how we competed and [I] hate losing.”
