Kentucky vs. Kentucky State Series History

Kentucky State comes to Rupp Arena for a second straight season after last year’s teams collided in this same spot nearly one year ago to the date. The Wildcats won last year’s exhibition, 111-53.

The Thorobreds have been one of the more frequent exhibition opponents since John Calipari took over in Lexington. Kentucky also beat Kentucky State in preseason tune-ups in 2019 (83-51) and 2015 (111-58).

Kentucky and Kentucky State first met in a real game in 2001, when Winston Bennett coached the Thorobreds against a Tubby Smith team led by Tayshaun Prince, Keith Bogans, and Gerald Fitch. The ninth-ranked Wildcats won that one, 118-63, between December Saturday games against UNC (a win) and Duke (a loss).

Kentucky vs. Kentucky State Storylines

THE LAST DRESS REHEARSAL

Thursday night’s exhibition is the last tune-up for the Wildcats after a unique offseason. Kentucky played four summer exhibition games in Canada back in July, then played through the Big Blue Madness and Blue-White scrimmages with barely enough bodies for 5-on-5 competition.

Kentucky hosts New Mexico State in the regular season opener Monday night.

UNITY SERIES

As part of the Unity Series, Kentucky Basketball will honor George Raveling and P.G. Peeples as its two Unity Series Legends this year. Raveling and Peebles addressed both teams last night, and they will be recognized at tonight’s game.

KENTUCKY’S FRESHMEN NEED EXPERIENCE

With so many freshmen, Kentucky needs to make the most of every opportunity to get better, especially tonight in the last game that doesn’t count. As crazy as it may seem, No. 1 Kansas is only 12 days away.

Read the checklist for tonight’s game.
