Lincoln County’s own is coming back for another season in the blue and white.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Kentucky women’s basketball program announced that senior guard Emma King will return for one more season of college hoops. The 5-foot-10 native of Stanford, KY has already played four seasons with the Wildcats but is taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to student-athletes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

King, who originally committed to UK back in the summer of 2017, will enter the 2023-24 season as a fifth-year graduate student. She’s played a total of 68 games so far during her time in Lexington, starting six of them.

The news of King’s return comes on the heels of another postseason decision that saw freshman guard Kennedy Cambridge put her name in the transfer portal on Sunday. Kentucky was knocked out of the 2023 SEC Tournament last week by Tennessee after winning the first two rounds, but it was a disappointing season overall for the team. Kentucky finished 12-19 on the season with a 2-14 mark in conference action.

King has mostly come off the bench during her college career, averaging 10.1 minutes per game since she joined the program as a rookie in 2019-20. She appeared in 22 games this past season where she averaged 1.4 points per contest on 29.3 percent overall shooting. Her best stretch came in 2021-22 when she played nearly 14 minutes per game and shot 33.3 percent from the field.

Considering head coach Kyra Elzy is losing a trio of seniors in Blair Green, Robyn Benton, and Adebola Adeyeye, having King’s veteran presence back in the mix will surely be a positive looking forward to next season.
